The bird, named ''Mei Mei,'' was donated to Japan by China for mating purposes under an environmental accord adopted the previous day in Tokyo between Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji. The 18-month-old Mei Mei was transported to the Sado Crested Ibis Conservation Center on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, to mate with Yu Yu, which was hatched in Japan.
