Lafcadio Hearn gallery opens in Greece

LEFKADA, Greece - Visitors examine the exhibits at a gallery commemorating Lafcadio Hearn, a writer who devoted his life to introducing Japan to the West in the 19th century, on the Greek island of Lefkada on July 4, 2014. Launched on the 110th anniversary of the writer's death, the gallery opened at the birthplace of Hearn, who was born to an Irish father and a Greek mother in 1850 and worked as a journalist in the United States before going to Japan in 1890. He became a naturalized Japanese before he died in 1904.

Opening of Yakumo Koizumi museum in Greece

LEFKADA, Greece - A Seiwa Bunraku puppet from Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, cuts the tape on July 4, 2014, to celebrate the opening of a memorial museum for Meiji-period writer Yakumo Koizumi, whose real name was Lafcadio Hearn, on Greece's Lefkada island where he was born in 1850. He moved to Japan and lived in such places as Kumamoto and Matsue.

Lafcadio Hearn's lamp stand

MATSUE, Japan - Photo shows a lamp stand at the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum dedicated to naturalized Japanese writer Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), also known as Yakumo Koizumi, in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, on Aug. 10, 2012. The museum was recently given the lamp, which was originally a gift from Hearn to Kenjiro Ume, a jurist. Born to an Irish father and Greek mother, Hearn arrived in Japan in 1890 and married a Japanese woman in Matsue, where he lived for a while. He introduced Japan's traditional culture to the world before passing away at the age of 54.

YOKOHAMA, Japan - This undated photo shows a clock that Commodore Perry from the United States presented to a samurai in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1854. The clock, made around 1850 in the United States and now ticking again after repair, was put on public display at the Yokohama Archives of History museum on May 29, 2010.

One of first Japanese-subject photos found in London

LONDON, England - Photo of Japanese sailor Sentaro, which was taken in 1851 or 1852 in San Francisco and is one of the earliest photographs of a Japanese person, will be auctioned by Christie's in London on May 11. Sentaro was one of 17 crew members on the Japanese vessel Eiriki Maru, which was shipwrecked in the Pacific in October 1850. The crew were rescued by an American ship two months later and taken to San Francisco, where they remained for nearly a year.

Himeishi Daimyojin Shrine

The photograph and mount bear the labels Himeishi Daimyojin and ..at the Temple of KAMAKURA respectively. An illustrated map from the year 1850 shows the Himeishi (Princess Stone) in the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine precincts. It also resembles, in terms of its shape and markings, the Masakoishi (Masako Stone) located today on Benten Island in the shrine pond, but the exact details are unclear. TOKYO, Japan - Photo collector Keisho Ishiguro shows an album left by photographer Matsuchi Nakajima (1850-1938) in Tokyo on April 25, 2012. Ishiguro found photos in the album showing the coastal area of Iwate Prefecture after it was hit by a tsunami of up to more than 30 meters following an earthquake in 1896. (Kyodo)
