One of first Japanese-subject photos found in London

LONDON, England - Photo of Japanese sailor Sentaro, which was taken in 1851 or 1852 in San Francisco and is one of the earliest photographs of a Japanese person, will be auctioned by Christie's in London on May 11. Sentaro was one of 17 crew members on the Japanese vessel Eiriki Maru, which was shipwrecked in the Pacific in October 1850. The crew were rescued by an American ship two months later and taken to San Francisco, where they remained for nearly a year.

It was constructed in 1851. The museum collections were based on the precious items that had been preserved for centuries in the tsars' treasury and the Patriarch's vestry. Some of the exhibits were made in the Kremlin workshops, while others were accepted as ambassadorial gifts. The State Armoury presents more than 4,000 items of applied art made in Russia, European and Eastern countries in the 4th to early 20th century.
