The Baldacchino dates from the 1620s-1630s and it marks with its magnificence the place of the Tomb of the Apostle Peter under the high Altar. The restoration of the Baldacchino (about 700,000 euros) is being supported by the Knights of Columbus, a global Catholic fraternal order founded in 1882. The restoration is expected to be completed in December 2024 in time for the opening of the Jubilee Year. The restoration of the Baldacchino will be undertaken in three phases, beginning with provisional work and planning and continuing with preliminary and onsite diagnostics and documentation. Bank of Japan to close Kitakyushu, Otaru branches

TOKYO, Japan - Photo, taken Oct. 4, shows the Bank of Japan's Kitakyushu branch in Fukuoka Prefecture, which the central bank plans to close along with its Otaru branch in Hokkaido as part of government efforts to streamline the bank's operations. The proposed closures, earmarked for 2001, are the first since the central bank was founded in 1882, and will reduce the number of BOJ main branches in Japan to 31.

The Great Buddha at Daibutsuyama, Ueno Shinobazugaoka. The lack of temple housing indicates that the photograph was taken after 1873, probably around 1882 in view of the fact that the photographer is Usui Shuzaburo. The path in front of the Buddha to the left leads to Ueno Seiyoken Restaurant, which opened in April 1873 as the second location of Tsukiji Seiyoken of Kyobashi Unemecho. A sign saying Seiyoken Annex is visible to the left of the path. The street in the foreground is Kuromon Dori (Black Gate Street). The Great Bell, Hokoji Temple

The big bell of Hokoji Temple placed on stone blocks is viewed from the east. A wooden fence surrounds the bell, and two men are standing nearby. The Nishiyama mountains are faintly visible in the background. The big bell was made at the time of the reconstruction of the temple by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1614. It is said to have been 4.5m high, 2.8m in diameter, 28cm thick and about 8.3 tons in weight. This is the Oura Bund around the mid-Meiji period. The second building from the right is Oura No. 10, the home of the Nagasaki Club, a social place for foreign residents at the time. The electric pole in front of the building was installed by Nagasaki Electric Light Company after 1893. The hill behind the buildings is Higashiyamate. Shijo-dori Avenue,Gion

Western view of Shijo Street (at the foot of the stone stairs of Gion) from the western gate of Yasaka Shrine. The stone statue of a guardian dog on the right was built by Iwata Chubei, Koizumi Shinshichi, and other residents of Kankoboko-cho, Shijo-dori-Muromachi-Higashi-iru in 1882 as a wish for family peace and prosperity. An estate and its garden

This seems to be the villa of Matsudaira Yorisato, feudal lord of the Takamatsu Clan, located in Totsuka Village (present-day Totsuka-cho, Shinjuku Ward). Okuma Shigenobu, who founded the Tokyo Polytechnic School (present-day Waseda University) in 1882, bought this villa in 1884. It is said that he re-designed the garden in a mixture of Japanese and Western styles. In photograph #5010 taken in 1904, the pond has been filled in and covered with a lawn . The Jimpuro brothel was called Nectarine No.9 and, together with Iwakiro, was one of the top brothels of Yokohama until the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
