FUKUOKA, Japan - Visitors enjoy the traditional hanging decorations of Yanagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan, in a room of the house where Japanese poet Hakushu Kitahara (1885-1942) was born, during a festival on Feb. 10, 2014. The festival, featuring colorful decorations at more than 40 locations in Yanagawa, runs through April 3.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Numerous traditional hanging decorations of Yanagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan, are placed in a room of the house where Japanese poet Hakushu Kitahara (1885-1942) was born, as part of a festival on Feb. 10, 2014. Hirobumi Ito

Ito became Japan's first prime minister (1885-1888) under its modern cabinet system. Ito, who was the chief architect of Japan's first constitution, later served as the country's fifth (1892-1896), seventh (Jan. 12, 1898-June 30, 1898) and 10th (1900-1901) prime minister. Ito signed the Korean-Japanese Convention of 1905, which awarded Japan full control of Korea's foreign relations. Ito, who became the first Japanese resident general in Korea of 1906, was assassinated on Oct. 26 in 1909 in Harbin, Manchuria by Korean nationalist An Chung Gun. Born Sept. 2, 1841.

Data on Japanese emigrants to Hawaii to be available online

YAMAGUCHI, Japan - The Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii, located in Oshima, Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, will next month launch a research service to allow the emigrants' descendants to obtain information on their ancestors who sailed to the Pacific islands in the late 19th century. The museum will post information online on about 29,000 Japanese who emigrated to Hawaii to work in the sugar industry between 1885 and 1894, under a government-led program during the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

Museum of Japanese emigration to Hawaii opens

A museum on the history of Japanese emigration to Hawaii opens in Oshima, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Feb. 8. The museum exhibits panels showing the history of emigration to Hawaii by government contract between 1885 and 1894. It has a collection of 1,200 items, including such things as daily utensils, tools for labor and clothes used by the immigrants.
