CHITOSE, Japan - One of two government planes carrying the second core unit of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) troops takes off from the Chitose air base in Hokkaido on March 13 for Kuwait. The 190 troops, including 11 female troops, will be followed by the third and last contingent consisting of some 120 officers to be dispatched to the southern Iraqi city of Samawah later in March.

CHITOSE, Japan - Seen off by their families and fellows, members of the second core unit of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) leave the Chitose air base in Hokkaido on March 13 en route to Kuwait to participate in reconstruction operations in Iraq. The 190 troops will be followed by the GSDF's third unit, consisting of some 120 officers, to be dispatched to the southern Iraqi city of Samawah later in March. With the third unit joining, the 550 GSDF troops will assemble in full force in Samawah.
