The Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education, one of the earliest technical schools in east China's Shanghai, has finished its renovation and has been transformed into the Design Innovation Institute Shanghai, with the original architecture well preserved. The building was built in 1934 according to the will of British tycoon Henry Lester (1840-1926), one of the richest merchants in Shanghai of his time. He donated almost all of his assets to build a hospital, a medical institute and the technical school, along with other philanthropic projects. SAITAMA, Japan - The British-made team locomotive ED17 (front) and four other historic railway cars on display at the Railways Fair held at East Japan Railway Co.'s Omiya railroad stock center in Saitama, Saitama Prefecture, on May 26. The locomotive, manufactured in 1923, was used on the Tokaido Line from the Taisho era (1912-1926) to the early Showa era (1926-1989). The ED17 and the other railway equipment will be on permanent display at the new Railways Museum, which will open in Saitama on Oct. 14.

Born Jan. 3, 1860 and died Jan. 28, 1926. Kato served as Japan's 24th prime minister, from June 11, 1924 to Jan. 28, 1926. When serving as foreign minister in the cabinet of Shigenobu Okuma in January 1915, Kato sent the so-called ''21 demands'' to China, arousing fierce opposition both at home and abroad over Japan's attempt to secure hegemony over China. Kato's cabinet achieved the passage of the Universal Manhood Suffrage Law in April 1925, which granted the vote to all male citizens over the age of 25.

A bureaucrat turned politician who first served as Japan's 25th prime minister from 1926 to 1927 and later as 28th prime minister from April 14, 1931 to Dec. 13 the same year. KANAZAWA, Japan - File photo taken in December 2001 shows Hakuunro Hotel at the Yuwaku hot spring in the suburbs of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, which has been left to rot, much to the dismay of local residents. Founded in 1937, the hotel was a pioneer resort hotel constructed in a half-Japanese, half-Western style, characteristic of the early Showa Period (1926-1989). It was registered as a cultural property in 1997 but shut down the following year due to bad management.
