Korean ex-war criminal continues quest for justice from Japan

TOKYO, April 6 Kyodo - Lee Hyok Rae, chairman of a group formed by former Korean war criminals seeking justice and compensation from the Japanese government, attends the group's gathering marking its 60th anniversary on April 1, 2015, at the Japanese parliament in Tokyo. Lee is among the many former colonial subjects of Korean descent who were convicted as Class B and Class C war criminals after World War II for their involvement in the Japanese military, but were later stripped of their Japanese citizenship and rights to compensation as a result of the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty.

The ceremony, hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, took place in the same room where then Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida signed the bilateral security treaty 60 years ago in a building that used to belong to the U.S. military.

Korean veteran dissatisfied with Japan bill

OTSU, Japan - Kang Pu Jung, 80, a South Korean resident of Japan who was forcibly drafted and lost the fingers on his right hand during the war, voices dissatisfaction over Japan's new law for compensation of foreign veterans at a news conference May 31, saying that those eligible should be entitled to compensation equivalent to that given to Japanese nationals. The law specifically targets Korean and Taiwanese permanent residents of Japan who lost their Japanese nationality due to the 1951 San Francisco peace treaty.
