TAKAMATSU, Japan - ''Udon'' noodle shops are feeling the pinch as the price of wheat flour in Japan has shot up as a result of a severe drought in Australia, a leading wheat-growing country and principal wheat supplier to Japan. In Kagawa Prefecture, a region known for the delicious, low-priced Sanuki ''udon,'' some of the 900 Sanuki noodle shops are being forced to raise prices to stay in business. At Udon Tanaka, a noodle shop in Takamatsu (photo), the price of a bowl of plain soup ''udon'' will go up 20 yen to 280 yen from Oct. 1. ''Can't be helped. The price of tempura oil, salt has gone up as well,'' says Udon Tanaka owner Sadatoshi Tanaka.

The Finance Ministry said Sept. 24 it will sell 32,683 old gold coins issued between 1871 and 1932 in a manner to be determined by a study panel so as to minimize the adverse effect on the market for antique coins. Proceeds from the sale will be brought into the ministry's general account.

Fusion is the first phone operator in Japan to offer a uniform long-distance rate irrespective of the distance and the time or day of a call.
