CHINA-HAINAN-SANSHA-SEA TURTLE PROTECTION (CN)

(231004) -- SANSHA, Oct. 4, 2023 (Xinhua) -- This aerial photo taken on July 23, 2022 shows the Beidao Island, part of the Qilianyu Islands in Sansha City, south China's Hainan Province. Huang Cheng, director of the community of Beidao Island, patrols the island daily to protect sea turtles and their eggs. Besides turtle protection, Huang also needs to collect marine pollutants and restore the environment on the island. "Sea turtles are very sensitive to environmental change, which affects their life and hatching," he said. Huang Cheng followed the footsteps of his father Huang Hongbo. Back in the 1980s, China listed sea turtles under state protection and has since enhanced measures to prohibit the capture and trade of sea turtles and their eggs. Local fishermen were educated and encouraged to take up the job of turtle protection. Huang Hongbo was a veteran fisherman who knew a lot about the habits of sea turtles. The sea turtle named by the rescuers as Micha was released after a two-month treatment at Israel's National Sea Turtle Rescue Center. Micha's return to the sea was witnessed by its rescuers and many local people. Such turtle-release activities are held from time to time by the center. Once the "seeing-off" date is set, the center will inform the public, usually attracting many parents and children to attend the activity. NARITA, Japan - Photos show a turtle and a lizard protected by the Washington Treaty which a Japanese man attempted to smuggle into Japan. Hiroto Fujita was arrested for trying to smuggle 23 turtles and four lizards into Japan when he arrived at Narita airport from Bangkok in December.
