Snow being removed on highland bus route in Northern Alps

TOYAMA, Japan - A long line is seen in the Northern Alps in central Japan on March 24 as heavy snow on a highland bus route through the mountain area is being removed to make a bus route. The 23-kilometer route, connecting Toyama in Toyama Prefecture and Omachi in Nagano Prefecture, will be completed in the middle of April.

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo-bound cars line up at the Niiza tollgate on the Kanetsu Expressway in Saitama Prefecture Jan. 3 as the number of vacationers returning to the capital and other major cities from New Year's holidays in hometowns and resorts peaked. A 23-kilometer traffic jam blocked the expressway near the Higashi-Matsuyama Interchange in Saitama. Routes and connection points saw more travelers than last year, when many people stayed home due to fears about the Y2K computer problem.

OITA, Japan - Kazutaka Enoki overtakes Kenya's Samson Kandie with 4 kilometers left in the Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon on Feb. 6 and holds on to win the rain-soaked race. Enoki dropped out of the lead pack near the 23-kilometer mark of the fast-paced race but rallied to overcome the deficit and cross the line at Oita municipal stadium in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 51 seconds.
