Matsushita to release Blu-ray Disc drive June 10

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will release on June 10 a personal computer memory disk drive compatible with the specifications of the ''Blu-ray Disc,'' a next-generation ultra-large storage capacity DVD. The drive (L) -- 14.6 centimeters wide, 4.1 cm high and 19 cm long -- is designed to be fitted into a standard-sized CD drive slot on the core tower portion of a desktop computer. The memory capacity of a 50-gigabyte version of a Blu-ray disk (R) provides a capacity nearly 10 times that of a 4.7-gigabyte DVD. The new drive is compatible with both the 50-gigabyte and 25-gigabyte Blu-ray disks.

Hitachi devises vacuuming robot with memory function

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. on May 29 unveiled a prototype cleaning robot (photo) that vacuums the floor by memorizing the location of obstacles and other features of the room in advance. A commercial model will be released within a few years, Hitachi said. The prototype saucer-shaped robot is 25 centimeters across and 13 cm high, the smallest machine of its kind ever developed in the world, according to Hitachi.

The robot, dubbed ''My Spoon,'' measures 28 centimeters long, 37 cm wide and 25 cm high, weighing 6 kilograms. It took SECOM and its medical equipment subsidiary 11 years to develop the product, which will hit the market on May 1. Available in three different types, the robot carries price tags higher than 380,000.

Fossil thigh of herbivorous dinosaur found in Fukui

FUKUI, Japan - The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum announced Oct. 29 that fossils of what appear to be a thigh bone (photo) and other remains of a huge herbivorous dinosaur have been unearthed at the Kitadani quarry in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, where dinosaur fossils have been found in the past. Dinosaur foreleg fossil found in Fukui, largest class in Japan

FUKUI, Japan - A fossil of a foreleg believed to belong to a large plant-eating dinosaur was excavated in a stratum from the Cretaceous period in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum said July 11. The fossil is one of the largest foreleg fossils ever discovered in Japan, with its length estimated at about 90 centimeters and width about 25 cm, according to the museum.
