World's longest suspension bridge to mark 1st year

The 3,911-meter-long Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge, between Awaji Island and Kobe, will mark its 1st anniversary April 5. To celebrate, a company running the bridge has invited tourists to climb its 300-meter-high main tower.

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge lit up

The 3,911-meter-long Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which links the western Japan port city of Kobe with Awajishima Island, is lit up April 2 on a trial basis. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which is the world's longest suspension bridge, is due to open to traffic April 5.

The world longest suspension bridge (3,911-meter-long) over the Akashi strait connecting Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture and Awaji Island. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge's two towers, which rise 297 meters above the water, also are said to be the tallest of thier kind in the world. The bridge is scheduled to open to the public April 5. Construction began in May 1988.
