SALZBURG, Austria - Prayers are said at a mass at a Salzburg church on Nov. 10 in memory of the 155 victims who were killed in the Nov. 11, 2000 fire inside a 3.2-kilometer funicular train tunnel through the 3.203-meter Mt. Kitzsteinhorn. About 300 people, including Shigeharu Maruyama, minister at the Japanese Embassy in Vienna, attended the mass sponsored by the Salzburg state government in central Austria.

The fire engulfed a two-car funicular train packed with skiers inside a 3.2-kilometer tunnel. The group was on its way up the 3,203-meter Mt. Kitzsteinhorn on Nov. 11. Rescue workers have recovered the bodies of all the victims.

TOKYO, Japan - Four of the bodies recovered following the Nov. 11 fire on an alpine funicular train in Austria were identified Nov. 22 as those of Japanese nationals. The bodies were identified as Okihiko Deguchi, 42; his daughter Nao, 13; (top left and right), Ayaka Katoono, 14; and Maki Sakakibara, 25. (bottom left and right). The four were among 10 Japanese skiers who perished in the fire. A total of 155 people died when a fire gutted the funicular train inside a 3.2-kilometer tunnel through Mt. Kitzsteinhorn.
