SOUNDBITE (Spanish): RODOLFO SALAS-GISMONDI, Director of Vertebrate Paleontology at Natural History Museum in Peru STORYLINE: Peruvian paleontologists have discovered the fossilized cranium of a basilosaurus, a primitive whale dating back 36 million years. The cranium measures 1.35 meters in length and contains sharp teeth which remain intact. This discovery was registered at the end of 2021 by a team of investigators led by the paleontologist Mario Urbina, who profoundly carried out this project in the desert area known as Ocucaj found in the southern region of Ica. The giant cranium belongs to an ancient forerunner of whales and comes from rocks dating to the Eocene age, as the Director of the Vertebrate Paleontology Department at the Natural History Museum Rodolfo Salas-Gismond explained. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The date of the photograph is unknown. The large flat stones in front of the statue may be the former foundation stones. A document from the mid-Edo Period states that 60 foundation stones lined the perimeter of the statue, about 38 meters on the north and south sides and about 45 on the east and west. Taliban takes journalists to Bamyan

BAMYAN, Afghanistan - This photo taken March 26 shows the erasure of one of the two giant Buddha statues that were completely destroyed March 14 by Afghanistan's ruling Taliban milita. A group of international journalists flew to Bamyan on March 26 on a chartered Afghan Ariana airliner to see the site. The two Bamyan Buddha statues, which stood 53 meters and 38 meters tall, were erected before the region came under the influence of Islam. Prior to its destruction, the 53-meter statue was the world's tallest Buddha.
