FUKUOKA, Japan - Olympic and world champion Gezahegne Abera (R) of Ethiopia and Japan's Tsuyoshi Ogata run neck and neck at the 41-kilometer point in the Fukuoka International Marathon on Dec. 1. Abera, the gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the world championships in Edmonton, Canada, in August 2001, won the race in a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 13 seconds. Tokyo Gov. Ishihara cuts tape at opening of Oedo Line

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara (2nd from R) and Transport Minister Chikage Ogi (3rd from R) cut a tape Dec. 11 at a ceremony at Shinjuku-Nishiguchi Station to celebrate the completion of the Oedo Line, Tokyo's fourth city-run subway. The 41-kilometer quasi-loop subway runs beneath downtown Tokyo, passing under the Shinjuku, Roppongi, Shiodome, Ryogoku, Ueno and Kagurazaka districts.
