Top floors of condo in suburban Tokyo ordered to be removed

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court ordered condominium developer Meiwa Estate Co. on Dec. 18 to remove the 23-meter-high part of the 43-meter condominium building (photo), more than 20 meters above ground level, in Kunitachi, western Tokyo, and to pay compensation to local residents for destroying the area's scenery. The court said the condominium violates the local residents' rights to the scenery.

New patrol boat to prevent illegal fishing by foreign vessels

A ceremony to mark delivery of a new patrol vessel to the Japan Coast Guard is held at a shipbuilding firm in Tokyo on Feb. 16, 2021. The 43-meter, 200-ton Mikazuki will be deployed in late March at a Coast Guard base in the Ogasawara Islands about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo with the aim of strengthening surveillance of illegal fishing operations by foreign vessels, especially Chinese ships hunting for red coral.
