Nikkei closes at 4-month high, TOPIX at 5-month high

TOKYO, Japan - Passers-by look at the electronic board of stock prices quotations at a brokerage in Tokyo's Nihombashi district on May 1. The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei average shot up 491.14 points, or 3.52%, to 14,425.46, its highest close since Dec. 18. The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) of all First Section issues was up 45.23 points, or 3.31%, to 1,411.69, closing above 1,400 for the first time since Nov. 15. It was the highest TOPIX finish since Nov. 10.
