ITOMAN, Japan - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi offers a flower at a ceremony at Peace Memorial Park in the city of Itomanin, Okinawa Prefecture, on June 23 to mark the 57th anniversary of the end of the battle of Okinawa. The fierce ground battle, in which about one-third of Okinawa's population of 450,000 died, was the only one fought against the Allied forces on civilian-occupied land in Japan during World War II.

The U.S. LPGA squad gains an overwhelming victory over the Japan LPGA team for its 14th straight title in the Nichirei International golf tournament at Tsukuba Country in Ibaraki Prefecture on Nov. 1. The U.S. tour regulars, who began the day with a five-point advantage after the first two days, ran out 24-12 winners over their Japanese tour counterparts. Captain Pat Hurst was named the most valuable player of the 702,000 dollar tournament, in which the winning team earned 450,000 dollars to be divided equally among its 18 members.
