Japan: M7.5 Quake Hits Off Aomori Prefecture, Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful Magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck offshore at 11:15 PM in Japan, leading to immediate tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for residents. Warnings for waves up to 3 meters (10 ft) were issued for the north-eastern coast, specifically the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Tsunamis between 20 and 50 cm (7-18 inches) high were subsequently observed at several ports in the region. Furthermore, authorities are cautioning the public that "there is a possibility of even more powerful tremors." They also urged attention be paid to the potential for a larger subsequent earthquake.

Tsunami alert after Chile quake

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese department store operator Takashimaya Co. said Oct. 30 it will put on sale a 20.06 million yen teddy bear (bottom) ahead of the upcoming Christmas and end-of-year shopping season. The 90-centimeter tall bear wears a tiara 16 cm in diameter encrusted with 9.54 karats worth of diamonds and 2.71 karats of pink sapphires. It will also sell a 50-cm bear (top) with a smaller tiara garnished with 3.30 karats of diamonds at a price of 5.25 million yen.

Hitachi robot navigates its way to take images

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said on March 7 it has developed a robot (in handout photo) that moves indoors negotiating its way around obstacles and uses a surveillance camera to take images. The robot, which measures 57 centimeters high and 50 cm wide and weighs 33 kilograms, is powered by a battery to travel at a speed of one kilometer per hour on two tire wheels. The company said the robot can detect more things as compared with one with a surveillance camera fixed onto one spot.

Japan's oldest plow unearthed in Shiga Pref.

OTSU, Japan - A plow believed to be the oldest harrow in Japan was unearthed on May 11 at a ruin in the town of Notogawa in Shiga Prefecture, western Japan. Experts believe the harrow, which has a 70-centimeter-long base of Japanese cypress and three 50 cm-long oak tines, was used in the late fourth to early fifth centuries. The photo was provided by the Notogawa town education board.
