Japan: Heavy Snowfall Hits Sea Of Japan Coast

Heavy snowfall has battered a wide area of Japan, especially the Hokuriku region along the Sea of Japan coast. In Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, the amount of snow that fell over a 24-hour period until 3 a.m. reached 57 centimeters, marking the highest recorded snowfall for February in history.

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said on March 7 it has developed a robot (in handout photo) that moves indoors negotiating its way around obstacles and uses a surveillance camera to take images. The robot, which measures 57 centimeters high and 50 cm wide and weighs 33 kilograms, is powered by a battery to travel at a speed of one kilometer per hour on two tire wheels. The company said the robot can detect more things as compared with one with a surveillance camera fixed onto one spot.

TOKYO, Japan - Casio Computer Co. will launch the world's smallest digital camera with a zoom lens, Exilim Card Ex-S100 (photo), in late September measuring only 79 cubic centimeters. Casio said it made its palm-sized camera smaller by using a ceramic lens for the first time. It said the ceramic lens has a higher refractive index than glass lens. The camera is a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera equipped with a 2.8 times optical zoom lens. It measures 88 x 57 x 16.7 millimeters. The thinnest part is 14.2 mm.
