NAGOYA, Japan - Dead mullets are recovered by a Nagoya city employee on the Horikawa River, a manmade aqueduct, in Nagoya on March 1. According to Nagoya city hall, several thousand dead mullets are floating on a 4.5-kilometer stretch of the 6-km long river, which was dug in the early 17th century and flows by Nagoya Castle. Experts suspect the fish died from low oxygen levels in the water. Reports of sightings of dead fish on the river were first received Feb. 23, Nagoya officials say.

HUALIAN, Taiwan - Toru Yahata, a sea kayak instructor based in Okinawa, arrives in the eastern Taiwan port city of Hualian on June 18, after rowing 700 kilometers in a solo kayak trip from the northern Philippines. Yahata, 32, says it took him 16 days to make the voyage with his 5.5-meter boat, at an average speed of 6 km per hour. Yahata also made a solo kayak trip from Hualian to Yonakuni in southern Okinawa, a distance of 140 km, in June last year.
