MIYAKE, Japan - Mount Oyama on Miyakejima, a small volcanic island some 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, erupted at around 6:43 p.m. on July 8 after confirming that white smoke was billowing out of the mountain. The aerial photo was taken in the morning of July 9 by a helicopter chartered by Kyodo News. According to the Meteorological Agency, the mountain erupted only once, with smoke billowing 800 meters above the crater, and a small amount of volcanic ash was confirmed to have spewed out from the crater, but the smoke disappeared at around 6:50 p.m.
