Moderate but shallow quakes hit Izu Islands

SHIKINEJIMA, Japan - Photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter at 5:30 p.m. on July 20, shows the islands of Shikinejima (front) and Niijima (back) that were hit by a series of moderate but shallow earthquakes on July 20. The strongest quake jolted the island of Shikinejima with an intensity of 5 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale, the Meteorological Agency said. An earthquake measuring upper 5 jolted the less than 1,000-populated and 3.7 square-kilometer isle at 2:32 a.m., followed by three other lower 5 intensity earthquakes at 11:19 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 12:29 p.m.
