Kitty Hawk returns to Yokosuka from Afghanistan mission

YOKOSUKA, Japan - The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk returns to its home port in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Dec. 23 from a mission to take part in military operations against Afghanistan. The 81,123-ton carrier left Yokosuka on Oct. 1.

OTARU, Japan - The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, currently docked for its four-day stop at Otaru port in the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, welcomed the public aboard on Oct. 14 for a two-day public viewing. The public was allowed onboard from 9 a.m., an hour earlier than originally planned after about 2,300 people had lined up at the port early in the morning. The visitors walked along the 81,123-ton carrier's flight deck and through its aircraft hangars. Its fighter planes were a favorite attraction for photographers.

YOKOSUKA, Japan - The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk returns to its home port of Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Aug. 25 after a six-month deployment overseas. The 81,123-ton Kitty Hawk left Yokosuka on March 2 for drills and was then sent to the Persian Gulf. It was in the Gulf until June to cover air patrols over Iraq, in place of the Theodore Roosevelt, which took part in the air campaign against Yugoslavia by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The 81,123-ton Kitty Hawk is taking part in the annual drills for the first time. It replaced the aircraft carrier Independence in August at the U.S. naval base at Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo.

The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk leaves its home port of Yokosuka, southwest of Tokyo, on Wednesday morning Sept. 30 to take part in joint maneuvers with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force in the Sea of Japan in early October. This is the first voyage for the 81,123-ton Kitty Hawk since it replaced the aircraft carrier Independence in August at the U.S. naval base at Yokosuka.

The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk enters the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture on Aug. 11, replacing the flattop Independence. The 81,123-ton, 325-meter-long Kitty Hawk, which arrived from San Diego, Calif., has a crew of about 5,500 and is scheduled to be stationed in Yokosuka until around 2007. The 80,643-ton Independence left the base in July to be retired.
