Sohgo Security Services unveils security guard robot

TOKYO, Japan - Sohgo Security Services Co. unveils a cutting-edge security guard robot at a shopping mall in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront district on Nov. 27 ahead of its formal debut there in mid-December. Standing 1.3 meters high and weighing 90 kilograms, the robot -- tentatively named ''Reborg-Q'' -- can go on patrols on behalf of human security guards, detecting fires and issuing alarms, as well as video-taping its surroundings with a camera on top of its head, the company said.

OSAKA, Japan - A local group cooks a gigantic Japanese pancake Nov. 3 in Osaka city, attempting to set a new record for the largest ''okonomiyaki'' in the Guinness Book of Records. The pancake was about 8 meters wide and 3 centimeters thick, weighing about 1.6 tons. It was large enough to serve 5,000 people, the group said. The okonomiyaki pancake was made with 400 cabbages, about 4,300 eggs and nearly 90 kilograms of pork.

Riken Invents Nursing Robot

AICHI, JAPAN - FEB. 23: The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, known as Riken, one of Japan's top research institute, announced it invented a new robot to help care the patients by help them by taking them up in the robot's arms. The robot, dubbed Robea, can act like a human with censors to weigh the weight of patients automatically. Chisato Miyaji who experienced the robot, which took her from a sofa to a wheelchair, said she felt her body was moved up very gently just like a human helper. The robot itself is 1.5 meters tall and 140 kilograms heavy but the weight was reduced by 90 kilos from the previous model. Riken made the robot public for the press on Monday February 23 at its facility here in Nagoya, central Japan.
