Philippines: Kanlaon Volcano Erupts 1,200-Meter Ash Plume, Alert Level 2 Maintained

Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island erupted an ash plume reaching 1,200 meters on Thursday, April 9, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported. The activity is likely caused by pressure buildup from hydrothermal processes beneath the volcano. Twelve volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours, and sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,524 tonnes per day. Alert Level 2 remains in effect, prohibiting entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone.

Viewers identified the species as climbing perch, an amphibious freshwater fish in the family Anabantidae, known for crawling onto muddy ground after rain in search of water. Their tough bodies allow them to traverse rough surfaces with ease.
