To date, the cyclone has resulted in the loss of at least 1,167 lives throughout Indonesia and has affected more than 1,400 individuals across three countries in the Asia-Pacific region, amounting to an estimated US$19.8 billion in damages. This disruption of vital access routes highlights a growing trend of environmental disasters that increasingly threaten the fragile Leuser Ecosystem, as emphasised by Sayed Zainal, Director of the Sustainable Forest Advocacy Institute.
