TACHIKAWA, Japan - Sixty-seven elementary and junior high school students and their teachers from the island of Miyakejima attend a ceremony Jan. 8 to begin their third semester at the former Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo. They were evacuated from the island in 2000 due to volcanic eruptions.

TOKYO, Japan - A total of 130 elementary and junior high school students from Miyakejima Island attend a school opening ceremony on April 6 at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo. The students have been living in Tokyo since volcanic eruptions on the island forced all 3,850 inhabitants to evacuate their homes last September.

TOKYO, Japan - Thirty-nine youngsters, who were evacuated from Miyakejima Island last September in the wake of volcanic eruptions there, attend a ceremony to mark their graduation from junior high school, at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo, on March 19. Some of the students (standing) receive applause from lower grade students. The graduating students attended three junior high schools on the island before it was hit by the eruptions. They have since been boarding at Akikawa High School.

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata on Jan. 12 presents school children with collages commemorating a recent space shuttle mission in which he took part at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo. The children were evacuated from Miyakejima Island south of the capital following a series of volcanic eruptions there that started last June. The objective of Wakata's mission, completed last October, was to add components to the International Space Station.
