Sumitomo Metal, Mitsubishi Materials tie up in joint venture

TOKYO, Japan - Akira Nishikawa (L), president of Mitsubishi Materials Corp., and Hiroshi Shimozuma, president of Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd., shake hands at a press conference in Tokyo on April 17. They announced that the companies have agreed to integrate their silicon wafer operations by forming a fifty-fifty joint venture next January, creating Japan's second-largest silicon wafer manufacturer in terms of sales after Shin-Etsu Chemical Co.
