Nagasaki Harbour seen from Akunoura

Nagasaki Harbour seen from Akunoura

This is one of a set of four photographs of Nagasaki taken by Uchida Kuichi, who accompanied Emperor Meiji on his journey around the country in 1872. The Emperor's flagship is visible in the harbour. Although believed to be the work of Ueno Hikoma, this same photograph was found among Uchida's photographs of the 1872 trip in the Kasumi-kai collection and thus was confirmed to be Uchida's work.==Date:1872, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Uchida Kuichi, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number91‐24‐0]

Ebisu Shrine, Akunoura

Ebisu Shrine, Akunoura

Although the English title says Naminohira, this is the Ebisu Shrine in Akunoura. Koyanagi Gorozaemon Michinaga moved from Ebisu-machi (area of present-day Nagasaki Station) to Senowaki Village in Inasa in 1633. This served as an office for Nagasaki Magistrate Matsudaira Zushonokami during the Phaeton Incident. After the Meiji Restoration, this shrine was renamed as Inasa Jinja, but the original name was resurrected in 1937. Fishermen's houses dominated the area, which commanded a scenic view of the opposite shore.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number109‐34‐0]

Ebisu Shrine,Akunoura

Ebisu Shrine,Akunoura

This is Akunoura Ebisu Shrine. Kuichi Uchida took a photo from this same angle when he traveled with Emperor Meiji in 1872. Compared to that photo, the pine tree on the left of the torii gate by the sea side is missing. Therefore, this photo must have been taken after Kuichi’s photo. Also since the building located on the landfill area reserved for naval use, taken right after the typhoon on August 20, 1874, is not in the picture, this photo must have been taken prior to that. The shrine building has disappeared, but the shrine itself is still extant.==Date:about 1873, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)
