Japanese version of 'My Fair Lady' reaches 1,000th milestone

TOKYO, Japan - Actress Mao Daichi staring as Eliza Doolittle takes a curtain call in the Japanese adaptation of the classic Broadway musical ''My Fair Lady'' in Tokyo on April 28. The play was performed for the 1,000th time in Tokyo the same day, reaching the milestone 46 years after its debut. The show, which had its Broadway premiere in 1956, was first performed in Japan in 1963 as the first-ever Broadway musical featuring an all-Japanese cast and the Japanese language.

Rutaro Hashimoto

Born in July 1937 in Tokyo. Hashimto was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1963 following the death of his father, also a politician. During his long career at the very heart of Japan's conservative money-and-faction politics, Hashimoto never lost the image of a maverick with no truly faithful friends. French chef Lecomte dies in Tokyo at 68

TOKYO, Japan - Andre Lecomte, a French chef in Tokyo who counted visiting world leaders among his customers, died of a heart attack in Tokyo on Aug. 6, his family says on Aug. 8. He was 68. A native of the Loire Department in central France, Lecomte comes to Japan in 1963 to work as a chef at the Hotel Okura in Tokyo. Obuchi makes nostalgic tour of Queen Mary

Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi (L), together with his wife Chizuko (C) and his second eldest daughter Yuko (R), makes a nostalgic visit April 29 to the Queen Mary, the luxury ocean liner that brought him to the United States when he first visited the country as a graduate student in 1963. Obuchi made the visit to the liner, now permanently berthed in Long Beach, California, after arriving in Los Angeles earlier in the day on the first stopover in his weeklong tour of the U.S.

Keizo Obuchi

Born on June 25, 1937 in Gunma Prefecture and deceased on May 14, 2000. Obuchi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1963 at age 26, succeeding to his father's seat while still a graduate student of Waseda University. Obuchi became prime minister on July 30, 1998 but relinquished the premiership on April 5, 2000 after suffering a massive stroke. He died on May 14 the same year.
