Yoshiro Mori

Born July 14, 1937 in Ishikawa Prefecture. A journalist-turned politician, Mori was Japan's 85th prime minister. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1969 at the age of 32. After 30 years rising through the ranks in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Mori became LDP president and prime minister April 5, 2000 following the sudden death of then Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi. Mori was forced to resign as prime minister on April 26, 2001 due to his unpopularity with the public.

Coming from a family of politicians in Kanagawa Prefecture, Koizumi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 at the age of 30. Long dubbed ''unique,'' ''eccentric'' and a ''maverick'' in Japan's political arena, Koizumi took the premiership without the support of the largest faction in his ruling Liberal Democratic Party by advocating drastic political and economic reform.
