TOKYO, Japan - Japan Racing Association (JRA) veteran jockey Yukio Okabe, who has won a record 2,943 races, poses with Taiki Shuttle after winning the Prix Jacques le Marois Grade-One race in France in August 1998. The 56-year-old Okabe said March 10 he will retire from horse racing after 38 years.

Construction of world's longest tunnel on land completed

TOKYO, Japan - Central and local government officials walk inside the world's longest land tunnel in Aomori Prefecture on Feb. 27 after a ceremony to blast the last bedrock blocking the 26.5-kilometer railway tunnel. The Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency began constructing the tunnel that connects the Tohoku Shinkansen Line's Hachinohe Station and Shin-Aomori Station in August 1998.

Lower house steering committee discusses Suzuki issue

TOKYO, Japan - Kunio Hatoyama (C), chairman of the House of Representatives steering committee, heads to the committee's board meeting to hold discussions over a request for an arrest warrant for lawmaker Muneo Suzuki. Suzuki is suspected of having accepted a 5 million yen bribe from Hokkaido lumber firm Yamarin in August 1998 in exchange for trying to secure favorable Forestry Agency treatment.
