Japan's gold medalist Kazuyoshi Funaki (2nd from L) represented Asia, joined by Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu (Africa), former astronaut John Glenn (the Americas), former Polish President Lech Walesa (Europe) and Australian athlete Cathy Freeman (Oceania). Also among the flag-bearers were 1968 alpine skiing gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy, movie maker Steven Spielberg and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau to represent the pillars of the Olympic Movement.

Takahashi carried the flag on behalf of Japan's 267 athletes. Takahashi won the women's marathon on Sept. 24 in what the Australian track coach called ''the greatest run ever -- man or woman.''

The Australian occupation of Nauru (also known as Pleasant Island), a small island in the South Pacific, during the First World War. The island was previously part of German New Guinea, until Australian naval forces removed its German officials on 4 August 1914. Australian occupation began on 7 September 1914, and the island became part of British Western Pacific Territories, administered by Australia. It was briefly occupied by Japan during the Second World War, but then returned to British control. The island eventually became independent in 1968, as the Republic of Nauru.
