In 1987, the grottoes were listed as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. During his 2019 inspection to Gansu, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the grottoes. Xi pointed out that the Dunhuang culture shows the Chinese nation's confidence in its culture.
