In 1987, the grottoes were listed as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. During his 2019 inspection to Gansu, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the grottoes. Xi pointed out that the Dunhuang culture shows the Chinese nation's confidence in its culture. He said, "Only a self-confident civilization can absorb and draw on the achievements of other civilizations while maintaining its own characteristics." The Mogao Grottoes, first constructed in 366 A.D., symbolize the great achievements of China's Buddhist art from the 4th century to the 14th century.
