Women nestling up

According to The Bakumatsu Photograph Collection of Ishiguro Keishichi published by Akashi Shoten, these women were dispatched by the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Paris Exposition in 1867. Entertaining guests

This photograph can be found on page 157 of the book Bakumatsu and Meiji in Photographs published by Sekai Bunka Sha. A story of hosts being hospitable to a formally dressed guest is created here. The Oura foreign settlement and Dejima seen from Minamiyamate

This photo was taken from the slope beneath Glover Garden. The right center building is the Belle Vue Hotel, which had stood there since the Bakumatsu period. The porch at the entrance had been added later. The Oura settlement is crowded with western style buildings, trees stood in the middle of the coastal street, and a new one-story building has been built in front of the Custom House at the end of the street. Mt. Fuji seen from Kawai-bashi Bridge,Suzukawa

The former shogunate territory located on the left bank of the River Usui, with the Suzu River facing Suruga Bay. The photo is beautifully structured with Mt.Fuji and a pine boulevard, wooden bridge, thatch-roofed house, boat in the river and boatsman. Oura and Higashiyamate viewed from Minamiyamate

This photo captures Higashiyamate from a high elevation below Glover Garden. The building below is Minamiyamate No. 8 (present-day Minamiyamate District Nagasaki City Historic Preservation Center). The building on the left is the Belle Vue hotel opened at the Bakumatsu period. The western-style building on the hill to the right is the British consulate at Higashiyamate No. 9. The western style buildings in the background center are, up front the residence of the British doctor J.N. Forest at No. 10, the worship hall of the Anglican church at No. 11 to its left, and the white western style building is Higashiyamate No. 12 (former American Consulate) to the left of the latter. Koshima Hospital and the city of Nagasaki

This photo was taken some time during the period spanning the Bakumatsu - end of Meiji Period. Koshima Yojosho is standing in the middle of the photo. A hospital called Koshima Yojosho was built in May 1860 at Sako, Koshima-go, to treat commoners. In 1861, a medical school was built adjacent to the hospital. Pompe van Meerdervoort taught internal medicine and surgery there. The Chinese settlement was in the area of slightly lower elevation on the lower left.==Date:About 1865, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:F.
