NARITA, Japan - Photo shows some of the 21,600 cans containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) allegedly smuggled into Japan from Thailand and seized at Narita airport customs. Police said July 10 a Japanese man and a South Korean man have been arrested on suspicion of illegally airmailing in early May the cans of CFCs, which have been banned because they deplete the Earth's ozone layer and cause global warming.

Holes in ozone layer confirmed

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the holes in the ozone layer above Antarctica. The holes, which usually disappear in mid-December, lasted until Dec. 26, 1999, the latest day ever recorded in any year. The white parts in the picture show the holes, which are said to be the effect of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the earth's atmosphere. The picture, created from data made available by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Dec. 24, 1999, was released by the Meteorological Agency on Jan. 20.
