From early May to late June every year, caterpillar fungus enters its harvest season in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province. Found only at high altitudes, caterpillar fungus, known in China as "winter-worm summer-grass," is said to be effective in boosting the immune system. During the harvest season, the locals will start heading for alpine ground over 4,000 meters above sea level to collect the fungus. The caterpillar fungus harvest time can last over 40 days. For the locals, collecting this precious fungus offers them seasonal jobs and helps increase their income. In recent years, the average household income could be increased by 20,000 to 60,000 yuan (about 2,760 to 8,282 U.S. dollars) per year by selling caterpillar fungus in Shade Town of Kangding C

Born in 1934, Kelsang Chodron was once a serf of a local manor. As both her parents served as serfs in the manor, the same misfortune befell her ever since she was born. Suffering from endless work and hunger day and night, Kelsang chose to escape from the place of misery once, along with two other girls who shared the same sufferings with her. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain. They were caught back to the manor, ending with severe punishment. "I was badly beaten up with unbearable pain," Kelsang Chodron recalled. After the democratic reform in 1959, life of Kelsang Chodron has totally changed. She and her husband gave birth to four children. At present, she lives happily with her grandson and granddaughter-in-law at a two-story house. "Hunger has completely gone out of my life now," said Kelsang Chodr
