"Jiandu" are the bamboo and wooden slips on which ancient Chinese people wrote using ink and brushes before the invention of paper. The Gansu Jiandu Museum is China's only provincial-level museum focusing on bamboo and wooden slips. It has a collection of nearly 40,000 such slips dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.) and Western Jin Dynasty (265-317), and it also houses more than 10,000 other artifacts, including paper, textiles, woodenware, lacquerware and ironware. Most of these slips are being showcased for the first time since they were discovered, including those dating back some 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 220). Bamboo slips, with vertical columns of characters, were China's first form of books. They were the main writing material before paper. A bamboo slip, or even a character on it, could reveal hidden history. Thousands of years before the day was celebrated worldwide, ancient Chinese people had made great efforts to protect the environment and live harmoniously with nature. The Doctrine of Seasons, an inscription showing how ancient Chinese people lived and worked according to changes of climate and phenology, is being displayed at Gansu Jiandu Museum in northwest China.
