PETERSBURG, Russia CATEGORY: SCIENCE SHOTLIST: 1. various of the rocket model launch event in St. Petersburg STORYLINE: The Russian city of St. Petersburg hosted its 36th annual rocket model launch event on Sunday, in celebration of the International Day of Human Space Flight, which is also called Cosmonautics Day in Russia. About 100 rocket models built by children were launched during the event. Observed annually on April 12, the International Day of Human Space Flight commemorates the date in 1961 when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin carried out the first-ever human space flight. "His (Yuri Gagarin's) flight was the pinnacle of the selfless labor of many specialists, workers, engineers and designers, and demonstrated to the whole world the superiority of domestic science and technology," said cosmonaut Denis Matveev. His colleague Sergei Korsakov also thanked all those who work "for the benefit of space exploration." On April 12, 1961, the Vostok-1 launch vehicle delivered Yuri Gagarin into Earth's orbit. In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted this date as the International Day of Human Space Flight. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Moscow. (XHTV)
