A fireworks festival in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai district descended into chaos on Monday evening, August 4, when two of eight launch barges caught fire, forcing the event's cancellation. Five crew members jumped into the sea and were rescued; one sustained minor injuries. About 20,000 fireworks had been scheduled, but the blaze — reportedly caused by a launch system malfunction — continued firing briefly despite attempts to stop it. The fire was extinguished by Tuesday morning, and police and the coast guard are investigating.
