So Man Sul, 74, picked up as new Chongryun chief

TOKYO, Japan - So Man Sul, 74, is named as the new leader of the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryun) at a two-day convention in Tokyo on May 26. Convention delegates chose So, 74, to succeed the late Han Tok Su, who died of pneumonia in February at the age of 94 after leading the group for nearly half a century.

Kim and eight senior members of Mindan's Osaka head office paid their last respects to Han at Chongryun's Osaka headquarters in Higashi-Yodogawa Ward. It was the first time for Mindan's Osaka head office to make a condolence visit to a funeral at its North Korean counterpart.

A high-level delegation from North Korea, headed by Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, attended the funeral. Han died of pneumonia on Feb. 21 at age 94.
