The English caption reads Bronze gate and tomb of Ietsugu. The Seventh Shogun Ietsugu was the son of Ienobu. He became Shogun at the age of five and died of an illness at the age of eight. Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond), Todaiji Temple

This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present. This gate was rebuilt, and so the one in the photo does not exist at present. The main building was located to the rear of this gate. The lanterns on both sides of the stone steps were donated at the end of the Edo era.
