TOKYO, Japan - Takashi Okamoto, who was indicted in Ohio in May 2001 on charges of stealing genetic materials on Alzheimer's disease developed by the Learner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the state in July 1999, leaves the Tokyo Detention House by car on March 29 after the Tokyo High Court rejected Washington's request to extradite him to the United States. Japan eyes extraditing researcher in spy case

TOKYO, Japan - Japan plans to extradite Takashi Okamoto (file photo) to the United States for trial on charges of stealing classified genetic materials on Alzheimer's disease from a U.S. government-funded research lab and spiriting them to Japan, Justice Ministry sources said May 17. Okamoto, 41, worked at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation until July 1999.
