The Warmth Of Play In Erbil s Cold And Fog

Despite harsh winter weather marked by severe cold and dense, heavy fog, daily life and the human spirit persist in the bustling, densely populated neighborhoods of Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, on December 15, 2025, where the day’s most striking visual scenes center on groups of local children dressed in simple, heavy winter clothing who continue to play, laugh and engage in carefree games with unrestrained joy, undeterred by the challenging climate, as their presence and defiant play capture the warmth, resilience and continuity of life amid the cold and shadow of the urban environment. Satellite View of Graham Land - Antarctica

Satellite View of Graham Land - Antarctica

Handout Satellite views dated on November 21, 2025, shows Graham Land. Graham Land, the northernmost stretch of the Antarctic Peninsula, is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Its mountainous spine and outlet glaciers drain into the Weddell Sea, forming an important transition zone between grounded ice, floating shelves, and open water. This dynamic landscape supports rich marine ecosystems, including krill-dependent species such as seals, penguins, and seabirds, and plays an important role in global ocean circulation and climate regulation. This Copernicus Sentinel-1 image, acquired on 21 November 2025, shows the contrasting textures of grounded ice, fragmented sea ice, and dark, open ocean, revealing key glaciological features in radar backscatter. Copernicus data is essential to climate science. A recent study published in Nature used Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data to analyse glacier dynamics in Graham Land, Antarctica. The illustrator Coco Signs Her New Book - Paris

On the occasion of the publication of her new book "Signed by Coco" (Signe Coco, Les Arenes editions, 2025), cartoonist Coco, a figure at Libération newspaper and Charlie Hebdo, discusses four years of political, social, and international upheaval—from the #MeToo movement to the war in Ukraine, from the climate crisis to women's rights—as well as the place of editorial cartoons in a tense world, where humor and commitment remain acts of resistance. She discusses these issues with Jeremie Peltier, co-director general of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, in Paris, France, on December 5, 2025. Photo by Lionel Urman/ABACAPRESS.COM
