Spain: Global Sumud Flotilla Sets Sail from Barcelona

A global fleet of over 50 civilian vessels from 44 countries, part of the largest maritime mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, was forced to return to a port in Barcelona on Sunday, August 31, due to unsafe weather. The flotilla, called the Global Sumud Flotilla, which includes activists, humanitarians, doctors, and supplies, successfully set sail the following evening. By mid-Tuesday, the group had reached about 45 nautical miles from Barcelona.

Ada Colau, a politician and former mayor of Barcelona for the past 8 years, is posing on the AK Deniz, the main ship of the Freedom Flotilla in Tuzla, Istanbul on April 23, 2024 ‘Today I’m here because Barcelona became the first big city in Europe to suspend relations with Israel a year ago, but it’s not enough. The situation has worsen and the genocide against Palestinian people continues. It’s not enough to talk about it and we have to act. As a politician I have to do anything that’s possible. I’m here to defend human rights, peace and justice for Palestinian people and for all humanity. We’re ready and we are waiting to sail to deliver humanitarian aid and food. There’s a lot of pressure now to block the mission from Israel, the United States and Germany. But I’m only afraid because the genocide is continuing in Gaza.’ Photo by Su Cassiano/Middle East Images/ABACAPRESS.COM
