"Namahage" end-of-year rituals in Akita

AKITA, Japan - A man disguised as "Namahage" by wearing a demon-like mask and a costume made of straw, talks to a little boy in his house in Oga, Akita Prefecture, in northeastern Japan on Dec. 31, 2014. Namahage, considered a divine messenger bringing blessings to people, visit houses in the area every New Year's Eve, yelling and telling children they have to behave themselves in a tradition designated as one of Japan's important intangible folklore cultural assets.

NARA, Japan - Photo taken Oct. 25, 2010, shows two swords found under the Great Buddha of Todaiji temple in Nara, western Japan, exhibited at a cultural assets research center in Nara. The temple said the same day that two swords found under the Buddha in the Meiji era have been identified as sacred swords that had been missing for some 1,250 years since around 760 after Empress Komyo, the wife of Emperor Shomu who built the Buddha, dedicated them along with other items to the temple.

MIYAJIMA, Japan - Staffers at the Japan Monkey Center in Aichi Prefecture start catching monkeys in Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture, on Jan. 29, 2010, before moving them to the monkey center. Monkeys in Miyajima, where the World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine is located, have increased to more than 100 and have become wild, causing fears of injuries to people and damage to cultural assets.

Japan's oldest boat-shaped wooden coffin excavated in Nagoya

NAGOYA, Japan - Photo taken Feb. 21 shows part of what is believed to be Japan's oldest boat-shaped coffin which was excavated in the Hiratecho ruins in Nagoya's Kita Ward. The city's Board of Education said the coffin is believed to be made some 2,000 years ago, or in the latter period of the mid-Yayoi Era. The 2.8-meter-long, 80-centimeter-wide ''boat'' is placed with its bow facing northwest. Hisao Suzuki, who heads the board's cultural assets conservation section, said it is presumed that the bow faced the sunset as ancient people thought the coffin was a vehicle to take the deceased person to the afterlife.
