THIS RESERVOIR IS THE RESULT OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SERRE-PONCON DAM ON THE DURANCE RIVER IN 1959, JUST UNDER TWO KILOMETRES DOWNSTREAM OF ITS CONFLUENCE WITH THE UBAYE. THE CREATION OF THIS BODY OF WATER NECESSITATED THE RELOCATION OF MORE THAN A THOUSAND INHABITANTS, AS WELL AS THE DESTRUCTION OF MORE THAN 400 BUILDINGS AND TWO SUBMERGED VILLAGES. US: Glacial Outburst Flood Hits Juneau, Alaska, Forcing Evacuations

An overflowing glacial lake at the foot of Suicide Glacier north of Juneau, Alaska, caused the Mendenhall River to surge to record levels on Wednesday, August 13, flooding homes and streets and prompting evacuations. Such glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) occur when water trapped in a glacier-fed lake suddenly bursts through weak ice or soil barriers, sending a destructive surge of water, sediment, and debris downstream.

China: Floating Traffic Barriers Turn Flooded Street Into Surreal Parade in Qingdao

On June 15, 2025, in Qingdao, Shandong, bright orange traffic barriers were seen drifting down a flooded street like boats. Torrential rain had turned the road into a shallow river, sending the barriers—usually used to manage traffic—floating and bumping into each other. Bystanders laughed and filmed the surreal scene as the barriers bobbed gently in the water, resembling a slow-moving parade. The video ended with the barriers continuing their odd journey downstream.

China: Car Seen Floating Through Flooded Streets During Heavy Rain in Dalian

This is the dramatic moment a small car was seen moving through floodwaters during a short but intense rainstorm, appearing almost like a makeshift boat. On June 9, 2025, in Dalian, Liaoning Province, video footage captured torrential rain battering the streets and causing significant flooding. The car was seen navigating or drifting through a strong current, bobbing in the rising water as shocked onlookers looked on. The water level had risen so high that the tires were no longer visible, making it unclear whether the vehicle was being carried by the water or attempting to drive through it. The video ends with the car continuing to move downstream, gradually disappearing from view as the heavy rain continues to fall.

China: Nujiang River Rages in Yunnan, Torrents Sweep Through Area

This is the dangerous moment that the Nujiang River turned into a raging torrent, triggering a powerful flash flood after days of relentless rainfall. On May 31, 2025, in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, the video showed the Nujiang River surging with muddy, turbulent water. Fueled by continuous heavy rain and intensified by orographic lift, the river’s water level rose sharply, unleashing a devastating mountain flood. Water tore through the region with alarming force, visibly inundating the riverbanks and sweeping away debris in its path. According to preliminary data, rainfall across the Nujiang River basin exceeded historical averages by more than four times. Along the Dulong River in particular, rainfall over a three-day span surpassed 300 millimeters, with some areas experiencing over 100 millimeters of downpour in just a short period. The severe flooding damaged roads, farmland, and communication infrastructure, effectively cutting off transportation to several villages. The video ended with torrents of floodwater continuing to rush downstream, leaving behind a landscape of destruction.

Women workers were seen during oil palm fruit harvesting activities at one of the palm oil plantations and factories in Sei Lepan, Langkat, North Sumatra, Indonesia on August 06, 2024. Based on data from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), palm oil mills produce 2.5 metric tons of liquid waste for every metric ton. The direct release of this liquid waste can cause freshwater pollution, which affects biodiversity and downstream communities. Although palm oil plantations are not large users of pesticides and fertilizers, the indiscriminate use of these materials can pollute surface and groundwater sources. China: Burning Debris Flow Down Flooded River In Liaoning

On July 28, 2024, in Fushun, Liaoning, a northeastern province of China, a rare and startling natural spectacle occurred—fire floating on water. As heavy rains caused river levels to rise, piles of straws that had accumulated along the riverbank were swept downstream. Remarkably, some of this debris had caught fire, and the flames continued to burn as the straws floated along the current. This unusual occurrence of fire traveling on the water's surface, without being extinguished, produced thick black smoke and presented a frightening scene. According to the filmer Ms. Lin, the straw may have been artificially ignited to prevent excessive debris from piling up in the river along with the current and causing serious consequences.

Since June, the water level of Huaian section of the Subei Canal has continued to fall under the influence of factors such as increased agricultural water use and drought. In order to ensure the normal operation of the navigation lock during the period of low water level, the northern Jiangsu Navigation Management Office launched an emergency plan, repeatedly consulted with the water conservancy department to ensure shipping water, increased water transfer and replenishment efforts, and fully guaranteed the shipping demand of the northern Jiangsu Canal. As of 16:00 on the same day, the downstream water level of Huaian Lock on the northern Canal of Jiangsu Province is 6.1 meters, which has met the navigation needs of most heavy-duty ships, and Huaian lock is speeding up the release of ships to relieve the pressure waiting for the lock.
