With an investment of 2.5 million euros (2.73 million U.S. dollars), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the center is currently offering care to nine sea turtles and seven hedgehogs. Following a 10-month rehabilitation, the 5-year-old turtle was released back into the water by students taking part in the Young Reports for the Environment initiative and in the presence of Environment Minister Miriam Dalli. The turtle had been rescued off the island of Gozo last December after ingesting hooks, nylon and even a flipper found in the sea. An average of 50 turtles are rescued every year in Maltese waters.
